Your computer stores many files, programs, music, pictures, and other documents. Having a cluttered computer can actually cause your computer to slow down. Fortunately, it is very easy to clean and organize your computer by using some free programs that are already installed on your computer.
One easy way to clean up your computer is to use the disk cleanup utility that is on all Windows computers. This utility removes a wide variety of files depending on the options that you select. You should run this cleanup utility on a periodic basis to keep your computer free from clutter.
Open the Disk Cleanup utility by clicking the Start button, type Disk Cleanup in the search field and press Enter. Click Disk Cleanup in the list of search results and the utility will open. Select whether you want to clean up your own files only or all of the files on your computer. Enter the administrator password if you are prompted for one. Select the hard disk drive that you want to clean up and click the OK button. Click the Disk Cleanup tab and then select the check boxes for the files that you want to delete. When you are finished selecting files click OK and then click Delete files to confirm that you want to remove them. The Disk Cleanup utility will remove the unnecessary files on your computer. This process can take a few minutes to complete.
Add or Remove Programs
If there are programs on your computer that you no longer want or use, you can easily remove them by using the Add or Remove Programs utility. This program lists all of the programs that are currently stored on your computer, as well as an option to uninstall them. You should look through the list of programs stored on your computer periodically and remove anything that you no longer want or use.
To uninstall a program on your computer, click the Start button, click Control Panel, and click Programs and Features. Select the program that you want to remove and click Uninstall. If you are prompted to enter and administrator password, provide the information.
The files on your computer can become very disorganized and fragmented after it has been used for some time. There is a defragment utility in Windows that you can use to put these files back in the right order again, which can help your computer run much faster.
Open the Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start button, type Disk Defragmenter in the search box and then click Disk Defragmenter in the list of search results to open the utility. Select the hard disk that you want to defragment under Current Status. Click Analyze disk to determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not. When Windows is finished analyzing the disk and the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk. Click the Defragment disk button to start defragging your disk. This can take several minutes or a few hours to complete, depending on the size of your hard drive and the degree of fragmentation of your hard drive.
